A HIGH Street convenience store is set to close its doors next month - taking with it the town's Post Office.

Wellington One Stop has announced it will be closing on August 25.

A sign has been placed in the window of the shop, displaying the intended closing date and the town's nearest location, in Tonedale.

Somerset West and Taunton councillor for Wellington East, Keith Wheatley, has been working to find a new location for the Post Office, but has so far not found anywhere suitable.

Cllr Wheatley said: “With just a month to go there is no realistic chance of replacing a town centre post office just as One Stop closes.

"However, I’ve had numerous talks with Post Office staff and I’ve been impressed with how committed they are to finding a solution.

"There are one or two hopeful possibilities that we are working on but in the meantime people will ned to use the Rockwell Green shop – which is doubling its Post Office counter space to cope with extra demand.”

The Post Office also says it is still trying to find a solution.

Stuart Taylor, external relations manager, said: “The fact that we have been advertising the opportunity to local retailers without success suggests that they have no plans to take-up the opportunity.

“I can assure you that we are committed to Post Office services in the centre of Wellington.”
