A MOTORCYCLIST remains in critical condition following a crash near Williton last night.

The main road between Williton and Taunton was closed for several hours yesterday evening (Tuesday, July 9) due to a serious crash on the A358.

The road was closed at Croft Meadow near Sampford Brett causing heavy delays in the area.

Surrounding roads also became congested as commuters attempt to find alternate routes around the incident.

Speaking at midday today (July 10) a spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We were called at 4.36pm to the A358 at Sampford Brett following a collision between a van and a motorcycle.

"The motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries and remains in critical condition.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call 101 and give the call handler the reference 807 for July 9."

A spokesman for the South West Ambulance Service said: "At 4.36pm we were called to reports of a road traffic collision involving a motorbike and a lorry.

"We attended with an ambulance, two rapid response vehicles, an air ambulance and a doctor.

"One patient was taken to hospital via air for further treatment."
