A WOMAN hospitalised following a fire in her home earlier this morning is lucky to be alive, according to firefighters.

Fire crews were called to reports of smoke filling a detached home in Blindmoor Lane, Buckland St Mary, at 1.48am.

They got to work investigating the cause of the smoke and confirmed everyone was accounted for.

The cause of the accidental fire was an electrical consumer unit and firefighters ventilated the home, while Western Power workers were called out to isolate the power supply.

An ambulance was requested for precautionary measures for a woman who was later taken to hospital.

The hall and toilet area was damaged and the ground floor and first floor suffered smoke damage.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "The incident commander reported and would like to highlight that due to the occupant having smoke alarms and closing doors this prevented the fire spreading. Early detection that there was a fire within this property saved the female's life."
