A SPLASH of colour will break over Minehead seafront thanks to the winner of a competition to turn a dull green box into a work of art.

Terry Gable, from Porlock, took the brief to transform the functional but far from glamorous equipment box owned by Wessex Water and came up with a winning design.

She has designed a colourful cover, featuring Minehead Bay, Minehead RNLI Lifeboat and other local features – a perfect match for the theme “Maritime Minehead by the Sea”.

Minehead Coastal Communities Team (MCCT) launched the competition for a design on the theme as part of the Eastern Esplanade enhancements.

The judges, Minehead Mayor Norman Hercock, Katrina Midgley, who chairs MCCT, and John Burgess of Swan Paul Architects, felt Terry’s design would be popular with visitors and residents, and will bring a fresh vibrancy to the seafront.

Wessex Water has kindly sponsored the winning design that has been transferred to flat vinyl, sticky back panels and fixed to the box.

“People often comment on the state of the box. Terry’s design will transform it into something that shows more of Minehead’s seaside heritage, while retaining its functionality,” said Katrina Midgley.
