The people of Helston defied the weather on Flora Day, pitting gorgeous gowns and fancy foliage against the grey skies overhead.

Townspeople and visitors were out in the streets from well before the morning dance at 7am, right up to the end of the evening dance after 5pm.

Crowds with umbrellas and raincoats sporting lilies of the valley lined the route to see the dances, including the children's dance featuring more than 1,000 pupils, representing every Helston school, with the girls from each sporting a different coloured flower garland.

Helston's former Liberal Democrat MP Andrew George danced two dances, the midday dance and the Hal an Tow, in which he has played St Piran for several years, as he awaited the result of the election in his St Ives constituency.

There appeared to be slightly fewer people compared to Flora Day in 2014, in spite of the fact that the rain largely held off, save for a few spots of drizzle.

There was also a small alteration to the running of the dances, as the children's dance did not take its usual route through Lismore Gardens, instead entering one gate in Cross Street before passing around the driveway of the house and back onto the street, with the second band staying in Church Street.

The change did not affect the route of the midday dance, however, with the dancers wending their way through the garden and making a brief stop for refreshments before continuing on their way.
