Another set of family-fun activities will be taking place in Helston tomorrow getting children outside and being creative. 

Already the CAST-Off programme of free has proven popular, with sessions so far including origami and boat sailing. 

In response to social distancing requirements, CAST, based in Penrose Road, has taken its activities programme outdoors this year, to explore the valley of the River Cober.

Following a trail from Lowertown through Helston to Loe Bar, participants follow an activity map devised by artist Lucy Grant that suggests lots of creative and imaginative things to do along the way.

Making origami boats

Activities include painting and drawing using natural pigments and dyes, drawing with home-made charcoal and found materials, making boats, kites, woodland creatures and seed bombs.

The trail map is available so that individuals and families can take part at any time.

However, on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout August, artists will pop up at different points along the trail with special activities to inspire those taking part.

Here's a summary of what's to come: 

Saturday, August 15

10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm
Meet at Cober Camp to explore tales of the wild wood with Lucy Grant, make
woodland creatures, draw and play. (You’ll find a sign to Cober Camp near the
footbridge from Mill Lane).

10am to 12 noon and 2 to 4pm
Painter Ben Sanderson will be in Ben’s Den, the camp he has made near the stepping
stones at Lowertown. Meet under the canopy made from Ben’s old pain,ngs and learn
how to make charcoal, watch a sculpture taking shape amongst the trees, or do some
wild cooking (different actvities on different days). There are signs from Lowertown to
bring you to the right spot.

10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm
Painter Nicola Bealing will lead a session making stone mazes, shapes and circles on
Loe Bar beach, using stones collected from the beach. You can park at Chyvarloe and
walk down the track to the Bar.

Tuesday, August 18

10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm
Meet topographical painter Imogen Bone for a session making landscape paintings on
postcards. Meet in the beautiful meadow by Carminowe Creek on the east side of the Loe. (If you don’t want to walk around the Loe, you can park by the Degibna prayer
chapel and walk down to Carminowe. You’ll find a CAST-Off sign in the meadow.)

10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm
Meet Lucy Grant at Cober Camp to draw picture journeys using feather quills and sepia
inks and watercolours. (You’ll find a sign to Cober Camp near the footbridge from Mill
Lane).

Saturday, August 22

See with your ears! Meet artist Bronwen Buckeridge in the meadow by Carminowe
Creek on the east side of the Loe and use all your senses to tune in to what’s around you. Bronwen will show you how to make a simple ear trumpet to listen with and will guide you on a sound walk. (If you don’t want to walk around the Loe, you can park by the Degibna prayer chapel and walk down to Carminowe. You’ll find a CAST-Off sign in the meadow.)

10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm
In the walled garden near the Stables at Penrose, painter Nina Royle will show you
how to make watercolour paints from earth pigments, and botanical inks from a range
of seasonal roots, bulbs, barks, berries, beans and husks.

10am to 12 noon and 2 to 4pm
At Cober Camp artist Baya Benzing will demonstrate wild weaving using old man’s
beard and other plants from the woods. (You’ll find a sign to Cober Camp near the
footbridge from Mill Lane).

10am to 12 noon and 2 to 4pm
Meet artist Tim Pryke and his son Seb on the recreation ground near the Fairground
Car Park (just the other side of the road from Corornation Park), make origami boats
and race them down the river.

Sculptor and granite enthusiast David Paton will be in the walled garden near the
Stables at Penrose demonstrating a basic masonry technique of squaring a rough block
of granite using traditional tools and techniques.
