This September the Minack Theatre stages its own production of West End smash hit and Olivier and Evening Standard Award-winning play, Stones in His Pockets by Marie Jones.

Often hysterically funny, thought-provoking and witty, this wonderful comedy explores the impact of a major Hollywood film studio descending on a small rural village in Ireland to make a historical blockbuster on location.

With an uncanny resemblance to the likes of Poldark and Doc Martin film crews arriving in Cornwall, the story is told through the eyes of Charlie Conlon and Jake Quinn who are employed as extras along with numerous other locals. As cultures clash, it becomes clear that Tinseltown’s romanticised dream of Ireland is a long, long way from reality.

Beloved Cornish actor, Ben Kernow, and Mark Holman bring to life a multitude of extraordinary characters, ranging from the spoilt American starlet to the English director and the village old timer. The prolific and internationally acclaimed designer, Philip Witcomb, approaches the set and costumes with his usual flair and transports audiences to Ireland in the 1990s.

The show is directed by Hannah Chissick and has a score by Music Director of The People’s String Foundation, Ben Sutcliffe (Operation Neptune at Trebah, The Secret Garden, The Railway Children and Goodnight Mister Tom for the Minack).

“It is a great honour to stage Marie Jones’ brilliantly written play, here in Cornwall. I am really looking forward to working with Hannah and Philip to bring this wonderful comedy to Cornish audiences” said Minack executive director, Zoë Curnow.

“Following the rave reviews for our recent Minack production, The Secret Garden (2019), and the response to previous shows The Railway Children (2018) and Goodnight Mister Tom (2017) I can assure you that this latest production also lives up to expectations.”
