Internationally acclaimed live film company The Paper Cinema is bringing a ghostly feel to the Tolmen Centre in Constantine next month.

Ghost Stories is a wintry show for long, dark nights, brought to life through hand-drawn illustrations, masterful puppetry, cinematic projection and live music.

Discover what happened when the Devil came to Cornwall, the effect of a witches curse in Devon, ghostly apparitions in Shropshire, the haunting of Savernake Forest, Wiltshire and more.

For Ghost Stories, vivid pen and ink drawings capture these stories of the supernatural, which, through two puppeteers and a projector, are turned into a unique live film.

An ensemble of nationally respected multi-instrumentalists (including violin, guitar, musical saw and live looping) joins them on stage to perform an eerily atmospheric soundtrack.

On their mission to discover ghost stories for this new show, The Paper Cinema travelled to the villages of Callington, Lynton, Norbury and Great Bedwyn plus the urban landscape of Barking, Greater London. Ghosts, ghouls, poltergeists, witches and devils were brilliantly conjured from the page by school children in each place, not to mention armed skeletons and zombie armies.

Taking inspiration from the work of pupils from primary schools, plus a specially commissioned ghost story by crime writer Linda Rhodes about the tragic Barking boiler explosion of 1899, The Paper Cinema has created a set of bewitching illustrations to retell these stories.

The Paper Cinema was founded in 2004 by Nicholas Rawling, with Imogen Charleston and Christopher Reed, The Paper Cinema tour bespoke pieces around Britain and internationally.

The company’s previous work has included critically acclaimed, Total Theatre Award nominated Night Flyer & King Pest, staged at BAC in 2008, and The Rock Charmer, an extraordinary work projected on to the cliffs above Winspit as part of Inside Out Dorset Festival.

The Paper Cinema’s Odyssey premiered in the spring of 2012, Odyssey has gone on to tour internationally after being selected as part of the British Council Showcase at the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Paper Cinema’s most recent work is Macbeth, which premiered at Battersea Arts Centre and toured in 2018.
