Peter Trego on his commentary box 'carnage' and the media spotlight
SOMERSET cricketer Peter Trego says he was delighted to be featured on Radio Two's Chris Evans Show this morning and even said he hoped for an appearance on the show.
The show relived the moment a radio commentator had the shock of his life as Trego proved a smash hit in a game against Glamorgan on Monday.
Trego thumped six sixes on his way to 100, including one which shattered the commentary box window and hit BBC Wales’s Edward Bevan.
Listeners heard the sound of breaking glass as a fellow commentator said: “The ball’s just come through our window here.
“Edward’s had a blow in the back, I’m afraid.”
Later, Mr Bevan said he was shaken at the time and had a bruise on his back – but things could have been worse.
“I turned to avoid it hitting my face or head,” he said.
“There was glass flying everywhere – everybody thought it was hilarious.
This morning, before Somerset’s LV= Championship division one match against Worcestershire, the big hitter told the County Gazette: “You get a feel when you hit them and I hit it pretty cleanly in the middle of the bat so you just look up to admire your work.
“It was a bit of a comedy cartoon glass smashing sound – maybe I should have got 10 runs.
“It’s always nice when you can cause a bit of carnage – car windscreens are a favourite.
“I didn’t hear it had hit anyone until I was on the way home but I send my apologies and my best to the journalist.
“It’s been quite extraordinary since then with all the interest – I’ve had a lot of text messages from people saying they heard it on Radio One and then when I was driving to the ground this morning it was cracking to hear Moira Stewart reading it out on the Chris Evans Show on Radio Two. Hopefully I could get on the show – I’m a big Chris Evans fan.”
