‘British Lions’ return for reunion
THEY'RE coming back: The 1973 British Lions' led by John Dawe
THEY'RE coming back: The 1973 British Lions' led by John Dawe

The last-minute touches and final preparations are being carried out, as the "British Lions" and Penryn Rugby Club 1973 reunion weekend of May 23-25 May draws ever nearer.

The event that has been in the best part of planning for 12 months by a hard working team is now down to the fine-tuning stage.

The event will also celebrate the life of the late Les Williams an International union and league player who was closely associated with Penryn Rugby Club during his life.

In 1973 the "71 Lions" who were victorious in New Zealand and won the Test series, played under the guise of a Dr D W C Smith's Select XV against Penryn at the Memorial Ground, winning 38-10 in a memorable occasion.

Now, 35 years on, the Lions are returning to Penryn for a re-union weekend. They arrive on Friday, May 23, and there will be a series of events during the course of their stay when they will be able to meet old friends from the past and make new ones.

The first event on Saturday (May 24) will involve a visit to Pendennis Shipyard when they will view some of the superyachts and meet local fans for a pint and pasty at the yard's catering facility. Tickets are available from the Falmouth Hotel at £10 each.

In the afternoon the Lions will meet up with their old Penryn adversaries which will be followed by a gala dinner at the Falmouth Hotel when all 18 visiting Lions will be present as well as David Moorcroft and Lynn Davis from the world of athletics .

The weekend will be capped off on Sunday (May 25) with a charity golf event that will see golfers playing a round with the Lions at Falmouth Golf Club.

All profits for the weekend will be shared between the Alzheimers' Association and Penryn Rugby Club's youth section.

Amongst the confirmations for the weekend are Welsh greats such as Derek Quinnell, Barry John, Mervyn Davies, John Taylor and JPR Williams, as well as the likes of,Mike Roberts, Ian Mclauchlan, and organiser of the Lions party, John Dawes, who himself is relishing the weekend.

Dawes said: "It was such a marvellous occasion last time, that we are very much looking forward to coming back down to Penryn."

With very little time remaining before the weekend, there are a few tickets remaining and those interested are urged to contact the following - visit to Pendennis Superyachts Pint and Pasty, £10, Jane Williams 01326 312671; gala dinner £50 ticket, Paul Smith 01326 373921; golf day, Peter Le Patourel) 01326 372672.
