FOOTBALL: Late goals sink Wellington
4:40pm Monday 24th September 2012 in Somerset Sport
TWO late goals consigned Wellington to a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at high-riding Portishead on Saturday in new manager Jamie Ward’s first Toolstation League match in charge of the side.
They looked to be on their way to three crucial points as they attempt to claw themselves away from the foot of the table but instead found themselves travelling back down the M5 empty handed.
Ward, who has replaced the sacked Colin Merrick, was philosophical about the result saying: “Particularly in the second half, we applied ourselves very well.
“But you can’t legislate for mistakes and they tend to happen more when you’re having a bad run and confidence is low.
“I felt we ran out of steam instead of seeing out the game but we can work on that on the training ground.
“There is a lot of work still to be done although there were some better signs and we’re definitely a work in progress.”
Wellington fell behind after 25 minutes when striker Danny Benn knocked home a rebound.
But they equalised three minutes into the second half through skipper Leon Taswell, who then gave them the lead with a close-range header after 63 minutes.
With the home side pressing to rescue the game, substitutes Nick Steadman and Kieran Marsden provided the trump cards.
Steadman levelled the scores six minutes from time and, with barely two minutes remaining, Marsden headed home a cross by skipper George Parsons to steal the points.
