Minehead take a short break from league action this Saturday when they take on tough opposition in the FA Carlsberg Vase.

Though Minehead were fortunate enough to have been one of several clubs given a bye in the First Qualifying Round, they have been drawn against one of the favourites to lift the title this season in Bodmin Town, who visit the Rec for just the second time in history.

Bodmin, arguably the strongest South West team in the competition this season have started 2012-13 in exceptional form, after winning no less than three trophies last season.

Those included the trophy for the much-acclaimed South West Peninsula league, a league which they have either won or been runners-up in for each of the last five seasons.

This season, while remaining unbeaten in the league, Bodmin have already won cup matches at two Western League Premier Division clubs – Brislington, who at the time were top of the league, and Wells City.

Last Saturday however they surpassed even these lofty heights when they almost came the first Peninsula team to beat a team at Southern League Premier Division level when Bideford needed a late equaliser in Devon to salvage a replay at Bodmin’s Priory Park on Wednesday evening.

Minehead Chairman Brian Walder said: “The fact that Bideford play at four pyramid levels above us, puts our task on Saturday into some sort of perspective.

“We are obviously up against the odds on Saturday but it’s cup football and anything can happen. “I know that our players will be prepared expertly for the game by the management and that they will all be giving 110% – what more can you ask for?

Hopefully the tie will catch the imagination of local football fans and we can see another large crowd at The Rec.”

The one and only time that Bodmin have appeared at The Rec was 58 years ago in September 1954 when an FA Cup First Qualifying Round needed two replays before Minehead won through with a 3-2 victory at St James’ Park, Exeter.
