BURNHAM Ladies hit the ground running in their first match back after the Christmas break, but they failed to take all of their chances and were pegged back by a dogged Taunton Vale side.

The Blues were 2-0 up in 20 minutes courtesy of a superb Caroline Hunt brace, but a lack of concentration saw the visitors draw level by half time.

Amy Edmundson turned provider, as her strong and skilful running created opportunities for strike partners Hunt and Ellie Bishop, and it was from her cross that Hunt controlled and struck her first goal low into the corner.

The second came from a perfectly-paced pass out of defence from Emma Ballard, collected by Edmundson, who ran half the length of the pitch before crossing for the equally energetic Hunt to arrive and tap in.

The hosts looked good in possession, with Sarah Johnson and Hattie Lambourne linking and distributing well, but the sides went in level at the break.

The second half was closer and Burnham defended well, with Ballard and Ali Evely winning a lot of tackles, while goalkeeper Imogen Wright made several important saves.

Charlotte Rogers made her debut for the home side and looked impressive, and the Blues had numerous short corners that they could have done better from.

Jem Johnson was terrific on the left, and it was from the left side that the hosts scored what they hoped would be the winner, as Edmundson received a pass just outside the D, drove forward into the heart of the Taunton defence and slotted the ball past the keeper.

Unfortunately, another mix-up in defence saw the ball trickle over the line, and there was no time to find a winner.
