Somerset Premier Cup

Chard Town 1, Wellington 5

In an end to end and feisty local derby last night (Wednesday), the Robins came off second best to a competent Wellington side who deserved their victory but perhaps not by such an emphatic margin.

The visitors went in front on 12 minutes with a goal from defender Kai Fisher.

Chard found it difficult to find their men with a succession of long balls but territorially were the equal of their opponents.

However, two quick goals from Ian Bellenger and Sam Towler on 23 and 26 minutes gave the visitors a clear advantage going into the break.

Immediately after half time James Boyland pulled a goal back when he slid the ball past the advancing keeper and, for a time, there were hopes a fightback would materialise, especially after Jon Hill's terrific save from Bellinger's spot kick after Max Cooper had been brought down inside the box.

A series of bookings for both sides and the dismissal of Alex Stafie upset the rhythm of the game for a time but, on 85 minutes, Bellinger got his second goal and substitute Jack Bryant wrapped up the scoring in the last minute.

Team - Jon Hill, Ben Haines, Ollie Pearson, Andrew Holmes (Jack Dicker 82 mins), Kieran Bailey, Matt Howell (Octavio Lima 78 mins), Liam Cleal, Brad Miles, Taoufik Ben Salem (Steve Friend 78 mins), Alex Stafie, James Boyland.  Subs not used - Dave Duarte, Max Westlake and Luke Jackson.

Chard return to action on Saturday at home to Bristol Telephones.
