EARLY starter Mats Mattsson missed the afternoon showers that hit Brean Golf Club for the D&C Open, but he certainly didn’t miss much on the greens during his round.

The Swede has recently changed his putter, and the new weapon worked superbly as he stormed to a three-stroke victory and claimed the silverware with a stunning nett 62.

Despite the threat of heavy showers, a very healthy entry of more than 70 players took to the course, which was in excellent condition.

A countback was required to decide the runner-up to Mattsson, as both Dan Reason and Stuart Wills posted nett 65s.

Reason was awarded it with the better back nine, with Wills taking third after his gross 71, joint best of the day.

John Ham produced a nett 66 to secure him fourth spot in the nett competition.

Prizes were also awarded for gross scores on the day, and club champion Matt Shaw claimed this win with his 71 – Wills losing another countback.

Each player was only able to win one prize, so Wills took the nett prize as it was a greater value.

The second gross prize was awarded to Steve Bateman with a 73 that contained no fewer than three twos, which gave him a healthy share of the pot.

Third place went to Tom Broom with his solid card of 75.

Nigel Hodges won Sunday’s Super Series round with a 39-point total, at the start of the fourth rotation of the events.

He topped the leaderboard in the singles Stableford, but only after a countback with Kevin Davies over the back nine.

Matt Shaw continued his steady form with a third-placed finish on 38.
Shaw won a countback with Bob Smith for first place in the Midweek Stableford on Wednesday.

The duo both racked up 28 points over the 13-hole event, with Shaw winning with the better back five, while Dan Williams took third on 27.

Enmore Park Seniors had two away fixtures during the week.

The first, on the challenging Burnham & Berrow links course, was a close affair with Enmore just missing out by one match.

This was a fine effort by the Enmore team, ably led by captain David Pascoe, playing with Paul Waplington who won by 2 up.

Other winners were Graham Pain and Steve James, 1 up, and Mike Perry with Jeff Saunders also 1 up, with the final score 4½-3½ to the hosts.

Enmore then went to Minehead, and this time it was the visitors who won by a point.

The winning pairings for Enmore were:

John Newell and Keith Norcutt (4&3), David Pascoe with Kelvin Tutill (3&2), Jim McGuckin and Doug Read (3&2) and Jim Smith with Mike Sullivan (1up).
