Toolstation Western League First Division

Chard Town 0, Welton Rovers 3

AFTER the fine away win at Bristol Telephones the previous weekend, the Robins failed to continue that form on Wednesday night and were soundly beaten by a useful Welton side.

Despite going behind as early as the eighth minute to a fine volley from the unmarked Jaiden Savery, Chard executed some promising moves with James Boyland and Steve Friend spearheading the attack in lively fashion.

Liam Cleal fired just wide with a good effort and Friend was close with a header from an encouraging move.

However, excellent wholehearted defending from the opposition thwarted Chard's every attempt.

The visitors threatened, too, with some swift accurate passing until Savery forced the ball into the net from close range for his second goal just a minute before the break to give them a two-goal cushion.

This lead was increased three minutes into the second half as striker Francois Allen forced his way into the box and, although the vistors got a fortunate rebound, Savery was on hand to complete his hat-trick.

This entertaining game then turned even more frustrating for Chard with the home side often having the edge on their opponents territorially without anything to show for it.

New signing Alex Stafie entered the fray up front, a Boyland shot swerved past the post and a fierce Matt Howell effort was tipped over the bar, while other half chances came and went, but the visitors held on for a deserved win with some good quality football and formidable defending.

Team: Jon Hill, Luke Jackson (Ryan Mason 78 mins), Ben Haines, Andrew Holmes, Nick Jacobs, Matt Howell, Max Westlake, Liam Cleal (Kieran Bailey 57 mins), Taoufik Ben Salem, Steve Friend (Alexandru Stafie 48 mins), James Boyland.  Subs not used - Ryan Parris

On Saturday, unbeaten league leaders Westbury United visit Chard, again in the league (3pm), with the Robins hoping to replicate last weekend's win over high-flying Bristol Telephones.
