CHARD Town, about to embark on their 41st season in the Western League, play their first pre-season friendly tonight (Wednesday), as they visit neighbours Ilminster Town (ko 6.45pm), writes Colin Dunford.

It will be a rare meeting for the clubs, Ilminster having just won promotion to the Somerset County League Premier Division, one flight below Chard.

This coming Saturday (July 15), Chard fans have the first chance to see their team in action at home, as they host Sydenham Wessex League Premier side Shaftesbury (ko 3pm).

Meanwhile, the Robins are seeking a new first team sponsor for the coming season via a raffle.

The winner will become the club’s main sponsor, with naming rights for first team home kit – see the club website for more details.

CHARD Reserves manager Ivor Hutchings has wasted no time in organising his backroom staff.

His new number two will be 30-year-old Ashley Fussell, whose playing career was ended by a serious knee injury at the age of 21.

Fussell managed Combe Reserves for four seasons, winning several trophies.

Hutchings has already arranged four friendlies, with two more to be confirmed.

Tomorrow (Thursday) night sees Chard host Beaminster.

The three other confirmed friendlies are against Bridport Reserves (away, July 20), Upottery (home, July 28) and Axminster Reserves (home, August 17).
