TAUNTON Town have announced that striker Matt Wright will captain the Peacocks next season, with Shane White as vice-captain.

Both players - having signed from Truro City - have agreed to stay at the club into 2017-18, having been key men in Leigh Robinson's side in the season just gone.

Wright scored 28 goals in his debut season with the Peacocks (proving a real hit with the fans), and said he had 'loved' wearing the armband when deputising for regular skipper Brett Trowbridge.

Set-piece specialist White played in both midfield and the centre of defence for Town, proving himself a reliable component in the team.

Wright commented: "I’m over the moon to have signed again for next year and honoured to have been given the opportunity to captain such a great bunch of lads.

"I learnt a lot from Brett last year when I stepped in in his absence and thoroughly enjoyed it.

"I can't wait for the challenge and hopefully we can go one better than last year."

Boss Robinson is clearly delighted to have retained both players' services, adding that he intended to change the captaincy for next season - so this announcement does not suggest that White's midfield partner Trowbridge is departing the club.

Robinson said: "It’s fantastic for us to have secured Wrighty for another season.

"He was phenomenal last season and gives us so much both on and off the pitch.

"I like to change the captaincy every year to keep it fresh and, having captained the team on a few occasions last year in Brett's absence, I am sure Wrighty will do a great job along with Shane White as vice-captain."

Wright and White deciding to stay has given the club a boost after Ed Palmer announced he is leaving the Viridor Stadium, with the centre-back expected to sign for Truro City.
