BURNBRIDGE faced high-flying Clevedon on Sunday in the final of the Woodspring League Cup and came out winners after a thriller.

They started the game as underdogs but began with a fast tempo, and it wasn’t long before Burnbridge were 1-0 up fine move started by Keelen Woolacott.

His pass found Leo James who crossed to striker Charlie Crook, who in turn rose above the Clevedon defence to head the ball into the top corner.

Spurred on by skipper Ben Jaminski, Burnbridge were soon 2-0 up when Michael Cooper scored with a 25-yard free-kick.

Clevedon slowly took control of the game and got their just rewards before half-time with a superb left-foot strike into the bottom corner of Jaminski’s goal.

They also started the second half well but Burnbridge’s solid defence kept Clevedon at bay until 10 minutes from time when they scored with a header.

The whistle went with the score at 2-2 and the first half of extra time ended in stalemate.

Clevedon started the second half well and Michael Cooper’s last-gasp clearance saved the day.

However, they did score with two minutes to go through another header.

Burnbridge went on the attack and piled on the pressure until a cross from Kru Parkinson was handled and Cooper calmly stepped up to take the kick.

His first effort was brilliantly saved but Cooper was on hand to knock in the rebound and set up a shootout.

As the result swung to and fro, the game went to sudden death penalties.

Sam Grant scored a superb goal and Clevedon’s effort was struck to the top corner but Jaminski palmed the ball against the cross bar and wide as Burnbridge won the cup for the first time in 15 years.

Wild celebrations followed and the cup was presented to Burnbridge in front of a large crowd of supporters.

Burnbridge coach Richie Crook said: “Well done to all the players involved this season.

“We have now won the league and the cup to finish a very successful season as double winners.

“The lads worked very hard to get the win today by sticking to our tactics and game plan and having a real desire to win.

“Thanks go to all the parents for their support.”
