Somerset County Division 1W
Minehead 2, Burnham Utd 3

BURNHAM returned to action after a three-week layoff with a victory at a cold and breezy Minehead, writes Oliver Taylor.

The opening stages of the game were evenly matched, but it was Burnham who went ahead in the 21st minute through Matt Scott.

Receiving the ball from Joe Selway, he took the ball first time and lobbed the Minehead keeper from 25 yards, bringing applause from the healthy crowd.

Burnham took control for the rest of the first half with most of the play in the Minehead half and were again rewarded in the 38th minute after a Mike Stevens corner.

The ball fell to Joe Selway in the box, who coolly slotted home, giving Burnham a 2-0 lead at half-time.

Burnham started the second half sloppily giving Minehead some hope.

In the 50th minute, a penalty was awarded for handball, which was struck home.

This put Burnham under pressure but keeper Will Lamb pulled off the first of two point-blank saves to keep Burnham in front.

However, Minehead equalised in the 60th minute, which got the raucous home crowd believing they could snatch all three points.

Burnham have a strong team spirit under manager Steve Hainsby and were determined not to lose this game.

Then, in the 85th minute, substitute Charlie Harding put Jordie Eldridge through one-on-one with the keeper.

He rounded the keeper and, from a tight angle, scored his first goal in a Burnham shirt since signing from Berrow to give his new side the win.

This win resulted in Burnham leapfrogging Minehead in the league, as Burnham continue to look up.

Burnham Res 0, Clevedon Town Res 1

THE Reserves lost a disappointing game by a single goal as their recent poor run continues.

Burnham played well in patches but need to turn possession into goals.
Clevedon’s goal was more of a cross than a shot which looped into the far post, over goalkeeper Matt Dibble's head.

Wrington & Redhill A 3, Burnham Utd A 3

BURNHAM scored two late goals to snatch a well-deserved and hard-fought point against a strong Wrington side, who were using the full depth of their squads due to their reserves not playing.

Wrington started the game strongly but the defence stood strong, limiting shots at goal for the home team.

It was Burnham who then took the lead on 25 minutes, when Jim Starks laid the ball off to Ollie Taylor, who laced the ball into the top corner from 25 yards leaving the keeper with no chance.

This only spurred the home team on and they scored two quick goals before half-time, also missing a penalty which was well saved by Mike Graham.

Early in the second half, the score was 3-1 and Wrington looked like they wanted more goals and pushed men forward, which opened up a lot of space across the pitch.

Seventeen-year-old Shae Clements replaced Burnell and his endless running and tackling in the middle showed a real potential star for the future.

With time ticking away, Chris Jays scored his third goal of the season, before Harry Wedgewood-Potts got the equaliser after a counter-attack.

Man of the match: 16-year-old Mason Broadhurst (on debut).
