THE Table Tennis teams at Wellington School are going from strength to strength, and the Under-13s girls are now South-West champions.

The team of Imogen Venner, Naomi Jacob, Niamh Holland and Lucy Edwards competed in the Somerset Schools Team Table Tennis event, and won against Cornwall, Devon, Avon, Wiltshire and Dorset.

They will now represent the South West at one of the four National Regional Finals in Bristol on Sunday, March 5.

In addition, the boys team of Freddy Stevens, Freddie Bartlett, Cameron Forrest and Alec Williams were runners-up in the Boy’s Under-13s event, each player giving a fine performance.

Elsewhere in local table tennis, champions Tiverton Touchdowns are out of the Division 1 Cup in the first round after falling to Bridgwater Normals.

In a fast-paced match with just four games going longer than three sets, Normals relied on their middle rotation to pick up six straight wins in a row to power past and then extend their lead over Touchdowns thanks to maximums from Malcolm Sealey and Mark Duddridge.

Normals will face YMCA Old Stars in the next round after they took down Hewitt Hawks.

Hawks, who have been on a roll in the league, were aiming for their second semi-final trip this season but were denied by a maximum from Mel Horner as he claimed more points on the night than Hawks picked up.

Despite the strong showing from Horner, Hawks had Gus Persson keeping them in the game thanks to some strong play in his two wins on the night.

League leaders Smashers continued their path of destruction as they shut out YMCA Marauders.

Smashers showed once again why they are a dominant team as they made Marauders wait until the sixth match of the night to pick up their first points and claimed only a hand full afterwards.

Smashers will face Spinners, who defeated a two-man YMCA Rainbows.

It would have been a clean sweep on the night for Spinners, however Mike Gillingham claimed the sole win on the night for Rainbows as he defeated Mike Pryce.
