BANK Holiday Monday saw the Somerset Rebels move to the top of the Premier League table with a stunning 57-33 away win at Scunthorpe, the third biggest away win by a Somerset team since they joined the Premier League back in 2002 - just one point shy of their all-time record.

The match started in the best possible way for Somerset with a 5-1 maximum heat win in the first race courtesy of Brady Kurtz and Leigh Lanham, but just two heats later they found themselves four points in arrears to their hosts after Scunthorpe posted successive 5-1 race wins of their own in heats two and three.

Somerset immediately hit back with another 5-1 race win in heat four to level the scores – and Kurtz and Lanham then put the Rebels back in front with a 4-2 heat advantage in the following race.

Brady Kurtz and Josh Grajczonek sealed the Rebels win and the maximum four league points, with a 5-1 race win in heat 13 - and Somerset then finishing off the match with a further two maximum heat advantages.

The Somerset duo of Kurtz and Grajczonek both ended the match unbeaten by an opposition rider, but Rebels team manager Garry May was quick to point out that this was a superb all-round team performance.

“All the boys rode superbly today, and a look at the score-chart tells you all you need to know about this match as we provided 11 out of the 15 race winners, banging in no less than seven maximum 5-1 heat wins in the process, whilst only running in four last places.”
