WEPL Premier One Second XI

Bridgwater II 229 beat Shapwick & Polden II 148 by 81 runs

BRIDGWATER seconds continued their fine early season winning run with an 81-run victory over Shapwick and Polden at the Parks on Saturday.

On winning the toss the home side had no hesitation in making first use of a good pitch, with the expectation that a big score could be assembled.

Coombes fell early, however a reserved Liam Kitch and aggressive Josh Horler (28) repaired the early damage with a hard hitting stand with Horler being particularly aggressive.

With the score on 65, Horler was bowled by off spinner White and a position of strength was then thrown away as some bad shot selection saw Bridgwater slump to 92-5.

Kitch was still at the crease and he continued to show his teammates the application required, and found a able partner in Andy Roberts, as the pair added 52.

Kitch fell caught at mid-on for a well-played 60 from 101 balls with 11 fours, which was to be a match winning innings for his side.

Roberts (36) continued to show his experience and picked up the pace assisted by young Dominic Court, making his second XI debut.

They shared 36 before Court (10) fell, however some lusty blows from Tim Hill (20) and Roberts (36) seen the home side to a respectable total of 229 all out despite the stop start nature of the innings.

Shapwick started their chase well with 50 for the first wicket as Rossiter and Higgins bowled well without luck. Higgins (1-23) managed to get the breakthrough in his seventh over and the introduction of Kyran Devitt (2-28) saw him pick up two quick wickets as the visitors fell to 64-3.

Roberts bowled well down the hill and he picked up the wicket of Spencer LBW, which saw Bridgwater break the back of the visitors batting.

An inspired spell from Tim Hill (5-21) then ripped through the second half of the order as he picked up five wickets with his seamers, clean bowling four batsmen, in his best spell for the second team, as Shapwick were fired out for 148, some way short of their target.
