BRIDGWATER Town manager Richard Fey was full of praise for sharp-shooting striker Tom Knighton after his brace fired the Robins to a memorable 2-1 victory at runaway league leaders Merthyr Town.

Knighton scored once in either half to seal an impressive win for Fey’s side – and the manager described the forward as ‘a consistent goal scorer’.

“They (Merthyr) have only lost two games all season and after beating Taunton 2-1 last Saturday in front of a crowd of over 1000, it was always going to be hard,” Fey said.

“We trained well in the week and worked on things that I hoped would give us a chance and everyone bought into what me and Nath, said and it came off.

“There aren’t many teams that go there and win, let alone score two.

“We were disappointed their goalkeeper wasn't sent off when bringing Tom (Knighton) down, but he gets another brace and that's 18 goals for the season - and it just shows he is a consistent goal scorer.

“He always works hard and lately looks sharp and were really pleased for him, especially when he went through a tough time beginning of the season.

“We stuck with him and I always knew he would get us 20 odd this season, because he is a goal scorer and I believe in him and that he will produce.”

Fey also praised Town’s travelling supporters after another strong away following.

“I was proud of everyone associated with the club on Saturday versus Merthyr - we travelled over the bridge with people not giving us much hope.

“Our supporters were vocal and excellent again and it was great seeing them enjoy the win.

“We have shown this season that we can compete with the big clubs who are trying to get out this league, like Stratford, Taunton, Didcot and Merthyr - and we can't forget beating Weston in the cup, but we have great potential in this side and experiences like Saturday will help the young lads next season and beyond.”

Town take on Odd Down tonight (Tuesday) in quarter-final of Somerset Cup.
