Somerset Senior League - Div 1 West

Middlezoy Rovers 2, Congresbury 0

FOR so long Middlezoy have struggled defensively to shut the opposition out this season, but for the second week in a row they kept a clean sheet and won thanks to goals either side of half time from Jamie Temlett and Craig Wright.

After a slow start Middlezoy gave away a penalty inside the first 15 mins when debutant Alex Clapp brought down a congresbury forward.

Luckily for the home side, goalkeeper Greg Turner, another debutant saved the spot kick with his legs.

Turner was in fine form and was on hand minutes later to deny the visitors, after a well struck free kick, heading for the top corner was tipped away.

With the game in the balance Middlezoy took the lead thanks in part to referee Tommy Major who played an excellent advantage when Damon Jennings was pole-axed on the half way line.

The ball fell to Dan Luce who played Jamie Temlett through to lob the ball over the keeper from 18 yards.

The home side went in to the break in front and began the second half well with the measure of possession, as the away side resorted to kicking lumps out of the Zoy players.

The midfield three of Jennings, Tucker and Luce were in total control, running the game from the middle of the park and only one outcome looked likely.

Midway through the half, a lofted ball over the top from Jennings was missed by the Congresbury centre back which allowed Craig Wright a free run on goal to slot home.

Middlezoy's centre back pairing of Cann and Clapp were merely spectators for the remaining minutes and Wright had the chance to add to his and Middlezoy's tally, but he slide his shot wide of the upright with only the keeper to beat.

Rovers head into next week's game at high-flying Clevedon full of confidence and just about still in the mix for a top two spot.

Team: GTurner, LTurner, Cann, Clapp, ScTurner, Jennings (JaWarren), Tucker, Luce, Temlett, Whaites, Wright.
