THE experience and sheer consistency of Nick Channon was too much for John Lister in the semi-finals of Wellington Bowling Club’s indoor singles.

Channon started with a four on the first end and that set the tone for the match.

Lister did well to pick up a three on the sixth and a two in the ninth but it was Channon’s day and he won it in style, 21-8.

In the semi-finals, the vast experience of Bob Codd proved too much for the untried skills of newcomer Richard Manning.

Codd’s consistency was too much for Manning who tried everything he could but went down 21-7.

n The top two teams in Wellington’s men’s league met up this week in a battle for the first place.

The battle between Jay Merrell’s Newbees and Courtney Bowden’s Wellington 1 was close all the way and all rested on the 15th and last end with the score tied at 9-9.

Wellington 1 held their nerve best, winning by three shots, to go top of the table.

Brian Etherington, Brian Philips, Vernon Adams and skip Terry Dickins got off to a great start for Wellington 2 against Bob Codd’s Wellington 4.

After eight ends Codd’s team only held one shot – and worse was to come because Dickens and co piled on the agony to win 19-5.

Table-topping Demons did a proper job on their nearest rivals Yzeds in the Mixed League.

Ernie Windsor, Esther Twose, Brenda Wilson and skip Nick Channon started scoring right from the start against Gordon Wedlake’s Yzeds and finished 14-10 winners.

There was a bit of an upset when third placed Gumboots came up against the lowly Buzzards.

Julia Stanton, Derek Vile, John Lister and Rob Walters powered ahead of Geoff Jenkins’ Gumboots who did all they could but lost out 16-12.

The Falcons line-up of Ann Gilbert, Doreen Elliot, Ann Horwood and skip Keith Horwood laid into Gordon Brown’s Badgers with a will and polished them off nicely 22-8.

There was a very good game in the Ladies’ League when Esther Twose, Thelma Helps and skip Julia Stanton for Robins played Ann Lovell, Joan Greenway and skip Ann Cowling’s Wrens Robins looked favourites after nine, leading 8-6, but the Wrens came back with a three and a two on the next two ends to pinch it 12-10.

In the Weekend Triples League Yvonne Ede, Laurie Greaves and skip Bob Codd for Nomads lost 14-9 against Howard Barns, Gilbert Chown and skip Flo Chown for Hemyock.

The powerful squad of Garfield Taylor, Nick Channon and skip Margaret Brotheridge’s Beavers was too much for Norman Shutler’s Southsiders who did all they could but went down 16-4.
