Somerset Rebels into Play-Off final
8:00am Monday 21st October 2013 in Somerset Sport
THE SOMERSET Rebels have qualified for the Premier League Play-Off Final where they will meet Edinburgh in order to determine the 2013 Premier League Champions.
Somerset just had to avoid a heavy defeat in tonight's match at Redcar in order to top their Play-Off semi-final group, but the Rebels qualified in style with a 47-43 over the Bears, earning themselves 3 group points in the process to finish with a 9 point total, 3 clear of Newcastle.
After his 18-point maximum for Somerset at Newcastle on Sunday, it was Rebels' captain Jason Doyle who once again led the way with 14 points from his five rides, Doyle dropping his only point of the match in his last ride to opposition skipper Aaron Summers.
Doyle received excellent support from Nick Morris with a paid 12-point return, while Alex Davies and Josh Grajczonek contributed well with paid 8 and 6 points respectively.
Somerset team manager Garry May said: “I said beforehand that we were heading to Redcar with the intention of winning the meeting and that's exactly what we did. Again, this was another great all-round team performance and we were fully deserving of or win here tonight."
“We could have come up here looking for the 'easy option' of just doing enough to qualify, but that is not our way of going about things and the boys really wanted that win here tonight.”
“So now we have the Final against Edinburgh to look forward to, having lost in last year's Final to Scunthorpe by a single race-point, we are determined to go one better this time around.”
“In saying that, Edinburgh will be tough opponents, and if our previous matches against each other are anything to go by, then the fans of both teams are in for a real treat over the two legs of the Final.”
Somerset will travel to Edinburgh's Scotwaste Arena for the first leg on Friday October 25, with the second leg taking place back at the Oaktree Arena on Monday October 28, with the usual 7.30pm start-time.
