GOLF: Vice captain holds the edge in Cyder Cup Trophy

THE Vice-Captain’s team established a 12-8 lead after the first two legs of the coveted annual Cyder Cup Trophy held by Windwhistle Seniors.
Team selection takes place in secrecy before both Captain and Vice-Captain announce their teams which consist of 20 players per side.
The trophy consists of a foursomes match and a Four Ball Better Ball match with 20 singles matches rounding off the competition.
The foursomes started in swirling mist which cleared as the rest of the games got under way.
With players matched according to their handicaps, the games were generally close.
The Captain’s team started with a win, but lost match two on the 18th. Mixed fortunes followed and after game six, the Captain led by 4-2.
However, the Vice Captain replied with four victories in the bottom half of the draw to take a 6-4 lead after day one.
Results – Bonney & Williams beat McOmish & Skeels by 3&1; Harper & Beale lost to Cox & Stenhouse by 1 hole; Willerton & Flower beat Marsh & Mosser by 4&2; Hone & Roy beat Johnson & Hall by 3&2; Chance & Wallis lost to Wells & Pearce by 3&2; Barrow & Passmore beat Morfitt & Anderson by 3&2; Arnold & Bareham lost to Dobson & Frost by 2&1; Light & Dean lost to Davis & Hodder by 1hole; Paolini & Ireland lost to Robinson & Hodder by 3&1; Heath & Hill lost to Markby & Singleton by 2 holes.
The 4Ball Better Ball leg took place last Wednesday with the Captain looking to redress the defecit, but his team started badly losing the first two games.
There was some recovery in the middle, but they lost ground by losing the final two games to leave another 6-4 scoreline.
Results – Willerton & Beale lost to McOmish & Cox by 2&1; Harper & Wallis lost to Marsh & Drayton by 1 hole; Paolini & Flower beat Fielder & Small by 2 &1; White & Dean beat Morfitt & Hodder by 2&1; Chance & Roy lost to Hollingworth & Frost by 3&2; Barrow & Bryden lost to Markby & Pearce by 3&2; Arnold & Passmore beat Robinson & Davis by 3&2; Light & Hone beat Wells & Singleton by 2 holes; Heath & Ireland lost to Dobson & Anderson by 7&6; Bareham & Hill lost to Mosser & Stenhouse by 4&3.
TWELVE Seniors travelled to Dorset on Friday to take part in the Canford Magna charity golf day.
Amid strong competition, Adrian Wells took first prize with a score of 39 points, an achievement of which the Seniors of Windwhistle are justly proud.
This annual charity has raise £20,000 this year towards a new Children’s ward at Southampton Hospital.
