12:00pm Thursday 12th September 2013 in Somerset Sport
TEN-MAN Burnham United hammered Premier Division side Ilminster 7-2 on Saturday to book their place in the second round of the Somerset County Cup.
Matt Scott scored a hat trick for the home side and there were two goals apiece for Steve Leaf and Warren Whitfield.
The first half was a totally one sided affair as the visitors couldn't live with the high tempo full pressing tactics that United deployed.
Within 35 minutes United were 5-0 up with two goals apiece from Matt Scott and Warren Whitfield and another from Steve Leaf.
On 39 minutes the referee brandished a red card to the disbelief of the home team as Stuart Walford was adjudged to have elbowed an opponent.
Playing over fifty minutes with ten men made no difference as United continued to dominate and score further goals through Matt Scott and Steve Leaf.
Ilminster got their consolation goals late on, but the damage had been done.
Manager Luke Hussey hopes his side can take this form into the league. He said: “It was a good performance today, I’m really pleased. We just need to take this form into the league and find some consistency.”
