TABLE TENNIS: YMCA Kings secure another Taunton league title
YMCA Kings are champions once again of the Ark Removals Taunton Table Tennis League.
However they were made to work for their title after YMCA Old Stars pulled off a shock win against the champions.
Needing only 14 points to be crowned league winners, it took Kings until the ninth match to pick up the 14th point.
The Kings have Vince Jackson to thank as he managed to see off everything Old Stars had to throw at him, including a tense five set match against Mark Morley.
Despite the scare, John Troke picked up the winning points against Mel Horner as Kings opened up another bottle of champagne for another stressful title.
Ark Tigers secured second place in the league with a thrashing of two man Saints Raiders.
Ed Martin provided the only response from Raiders, winning two of his games and picking up points in the doubles.
Ark Angels managed to see off a strong Chameleons side with a strong finish.
The sides were tied half way through the night, but Dave Adeniji and Jackie Crook managed to find another gear and pull ahead to give the Angels the win.
However they fell short of getting enough points to contest for second in the table and now will be looking to take third.
Chameleons finished their season second from bottom, however they gathered enough points to make sure Saints Spinners will be relegated.
Spinners put up a tough fight against Saints Edgers in a game that went on very late in the night, with five games going to five sets. The scoreline of 31-14 doesn’t show how close the matches were.
Slav Oleksiyevets was the star for Spinners, as he took part in four of the five five set matches, winning two. One of his victims was Chris Norman who suffered his first league loss of 2013.
In Division 1, Team X claimed their maiden title in their first season.
With a strong 31-8 win against Saints Paradox, they secured enough points with a game to go.
