BOWLS: Wellington 4s maintain their winning run

DEREK Lane's second placed Wellington 4s continued their winning streak in the Wellington Bowls Club's men's league, overcoming a Hemyock side led by John Bendle 15-8.

The powerful combination of Don Wilson, Bill Brett, Mark Phillips and Bill Heard's experienced Old Codgers was too much for Newbees who suffered a 23-3 defeat.

Mike Groves' third placed Wiveliscombe had a tough battle against Mike Worden's Wellington 2s but came through 10-7.

Skylarks have been top of the Ladies League all through the season but Ladybirds are now fighting back.

Ann Lovell, Fran Hughes and Pam Darch put up a good fight for Skylarks but Mary Jenkins, Joan Greenway and Thelma Helps' Ladybirds were a bit too strong, winning 18-13.

There was nothing in it between Dot Challen's Wrens and Brenda Wilson's Robins so they contented themselves with an amicable draw at nine shots each.

In the Mixed League the top team this week were the Gumboots who won both their matches. David Robinson took them to a good win over Shirley Phillips' Hemyock 18-12 and Geoff Jenkins led his players to a 21-13 victory over a strong Demons side.

Derek Lane's Harriers fought hard against Helen Lancaster's Badgers but it was not quite enough and Badgers pipped them on the line taking the last end by two shots to win 16-14.

Dennis Courtney's YZEDs also worked hard right until the end against K. James' Hemyock but not quite hard enough and they lost by two shots 16-14.

Pam Darch's Buzzards had a close fight against Keith Horwoods' Optimists winning by just two shots, 17-15.

Gilbert Chown's mighty Hemyock team nearly got toppled in their Mixed Triples match against Nick Channon's Beavers. Level on shots. Hemyock picked up a single in the last to take the match.

Pam Darch's Fivers usually do well, but they were swamped this time by Chris Thorne's Pilgrims 23-4.

Bob Codd's Nomads are another team that take a lot of beating but David Robinson's Southsiders were on a winning streak and finished them off 20-9.

Just to add insult to injury Nomads were then beaten 15-10 by Chris Thorne's Pilgrims.
