FOOTBALL: Ward looks for defensive improvement as Wellington entertain Welton
JAMIE Ward’s focus in training this week was on organising Wellington’s defence after they leaked five goals at Keynsham Town on Saturday.
The Wellington manager was critical of the way his side defended on Keynsham’s artificial pitch and is looking for a major improvement at home to Welton Rovers on Saturday (3pm).
Ward said: “It doesn’t matter who you are playing, if you going to concede that quantity of goals you are going to be in trouble. It was down to what I would call a lack of defending principles and it’s something we need to work on.”
The one bright spot for Ward was the performance of second-half substitute Joe Holmes in midfield.
Ward added: “Joe has been a very patient substitute but when he came on he looked the best player on the pitch and maybe deserves a good run in the side.”
Wellington will also be encouraged by the return after suspension of midfield playmaker Andy Butler.
