Taunton race again next Tuesday, January 29, when the first action of the seven race meeting goes to post at 1.40 pm.

With a huge £50,250 up for grabs in prizes this is another high class card containing two Class 3 events and is expected to attract a large number of entries and provide punters with another exciting afternoon of action.

The feature race on Tuesday’s card is the Bathwick Tyres Handicap Steeplechase (Class 3) at 4.10pm which carries £12,850 in prizemoney.

Taunton has been judged the winner of the Racecourse Groundstaff Award for the best Jump Racecourse in 2012 in recognition of their achievements over the last year.

This is a significant achievement for the Orchard Portman course as the judging panel recognised the four year project undertaken by the team to widen the racing surface as well as substantial remedial work on their fences.

In addition, it was noted they had conducted much work in preparing for the installation of an irrigation system in advance of spring meetings at the racecourse.

The award will be presented during the racemeeting on Thursday, February 28.

Bob Young the chief executive at Taunton said: “This is a grand achievement by Kevin Councill and his staff of three under the watchful eye of Mike Trickey, our clerk of the course.”

“The Chairman, Mike Foden, and directors are very pleased to have such a professional, hard working team at Taunton. We are grateful to the sponsors – Pitchcare, ALS and Fornells – for the recognition and I know our groundstaff are very proud to receive the award.”
