Tiverton produce win in Palairet Trophy

Tiverton stormed into the second round of the Palairet Trophy after a convincing 4½-½ win against Budleigh Town at Teignmouth on Sunday.

Tiverton, last year's runners-up, had to give between four and nine shots in each match to the artisans from East Devon.

But the team, captained by Peter Garnsworthy and selected by his deputy Martin Selby, were in control from the outset and avoided a potential banana skin.

The final two games raked in the first two points as Chris Audin (2) and young debutant Daniel Perry (8) cruised to an 8 and 7 win, having been level par, while Matt Woodgate (5) and Nixie Acfield (6) triumphed 5 and 4.

Second pair Ben Hearn (3) and Simon Waddington (3) won 3 and 1 while Jim Bray (2) and Cameron Bundy (6), another debutant, secured a 3 and 2 victory.

Rhys Cruse (1) and Ollie Taylor (4) went out first and gained the half point.

John Court and Neil Forward both scored 40 stableford points to lead the way in the men's Hermes Shield on Saturday.

Court won Division One by two from Richard Moyes and Kim Garnsworthy and had his handicap cut from nine to eight.

Forward beat a number of players by one in Division Two and had his handicap reduced from 15 to 13.
