Katie produces stunning plate display

Katie Rule is rapidly earning a reputation as a young golfer with a remarkable talent for the game.

The 14 year old, who plays off a handicap of four, turned in a remarkable performance at Tiverton last week by winning the South West Women's Golf Championship Plate.

Katie was the only qualifier from Cornwall and produced some sparkling performances against very experienced opposition.

The first round saw her take out the number one plate qualifier by an emphatic margin of 4 and 3. This was followed with a 4 and 2 victory to set up a semi-final against the vastly experienced Georgina Snow and despite being two down with three to play, Katie showed great character by winning on the first extra hole in a sudden-death play off.

In the final she once again needed all the determination and comeback skills against Abbie Moyes who was playing on her own Tiverton course.

With two holes to play and one down Katie turned it all around in dramatic style to win the last two holes. Katie levelled the match on the 17th and then hit a great recovery shot from the left rough on the 18th to chip out as she took on a big oak tree and found the right side of the green.

Katie holed a 12-footer for a par to leave Moyes needing a putt of similar length to take the match down the 19th, but there was to be no sudden-death play-off.

Katie is certainly enjoying her golf and spends a lot of time practising at Budock Vean where she is a member and at Falmouth Golf Club where she has received great encouragement and is a member of the very successful Falmouth ladies' team. She has also received valuable work experience at Merlin Golf Club.

In a recent match, played off scratch, for Falmouth at Launceston against former Curtis Cup player Linda Simpson of Trevose, Katie came back from four down after 10 holes to win the next seven holes for an astonishing three and one win over the county champion.

Katie comes from a talented golfing family. Her brother Martin, who caddied for her at Tiverton, plays off eight and is a member of Budock Vean. Her mother, Sue Rule, is also playing well at Budock and her father, John Rule, is a professional who gives lessons at Budock Vean and Merlin Golf Clubs.
