THE home match against Truro B was the first of a very busy week for Mawnan, writes Tony Stevenson.
Phil Dunstone's rink looked to be off to a great start, holding four with one wood to come from the skip, who came in to rest on the jack, but unfortunately pushed the jack 12 inches to loose the end by 1 shot. After six ends the score was 3-3, but with some accurate bowling from their skip Mawnan scored a one, five, one to take a lead 13-6. Truro fought back but the rink went to Mawnan 16 -15.
Jack Gretton's rink were 5-0 up after only three ends, but Truro levelled the score to 6-6 after eight ends. A one, two, three on the following three ends put Mawnan into the lead which they held to win the rink 26-17.
Keith Penrose's rink took a 6-3 lead on the fourth end and maintained it to win the rink 21-16. Mawnan took all 5 points winning the match 63-48.
On the same day the ladies were away to Stithians in the Date Cup, losing 24 - 32. The following day the ladies were away to Chacewater, always a difficult venue to get any points, despite a close match Mawnan won the game 15-13.
The Strollers entertained Perranporth on the Friday with the visitors winning 66-39.
The men's second match of the week for the men was at home to Chacewater C which had been rearranged due to bad weather.
Keith Penrose's rink found themselves behind 2-13 after seven ends, but fought back to 9-13 on the 11th end. Despite winning the last five ends Mawnan could not make up the shortfall going down 20-22.
Phil Dunstone's rink led 7-0 after five ends, but Chacewater, skipped by C. Martin, hit back to lead 10-20 and held on to win 21-16.
Jack Gretton's rink, with some good bowling from their lead Don Hall, helped Mawnan win 24-18. When all the scores were added up Chacewater had won the match by one point 60-61.
On the Saturday Mawnan ladies were at home to Mylor in the semi final of the County Top Team.
Fran Walters played L. Houghton in the four wood singles and lost a very close match 12-17 while in the two wood singles Jenny Dunstone was up against L. Sulch and again lost a hard fought match 9-16.
Pam Dearnley and Rose Wilshaw played Jean Parke and Christine Robinson in the pairs and won 25-18. In the triples Jenny Quintrell 1, Val Knight 2, Pat Paget skip, for Mawnan played Audry May 1, Judy Chinn 2, Ann Sewell skip. Despite a close game Mawnan ran out 20-18 winners.
In the fours Mawnan had Jill Yearsley 1, Hazel Wilkes 2, Linda Storey 3, Judy Ramsay skip, against Margaret Calthorpe 1, Helen Chavis 2, Jenny Collins 3, Ali Williamson skip. Mylor seized the early initiative and although Mawnan fought back to level the score 25 all after 20 ends, but a one on the last end gave the match to Mylor 25-26 and the overall score of Mawnan 91, Mylor 95.
