Cornwall derby honours went to Redruth on Saturday as they beat Launceston by five tries to four at the Recreation Ground.

Dubbed the ‘Inferno in Kernow’ the match certainly lived up to its billing as the Reds set the match alight as they raced into a 17-point lead in glorious sunshine.

Sam Parsons crossed after six minutes after the Reds forwards and backs combined well.

Minutes later Greg Goodfellow picked up the ball from the breakdown and touched down under the posts, to leave Paul Thirbly with an easy conversion.

Redruth were doing all the pressing early on and they took a deserved 17-point advantage when lock forward Luke Collins crossed.

Launceston came back as their backs moved the ball out to Luke Tidball on the left and he went over for a try, which Kieron Lewitt converted.

However, Thirlby hit two penalties for Redruth to keep them in control.

From a line-out, on their own twenty-two, Launceston pushed the Reds pack back for Tim Mathias to score, but another penalty from Thirbly gave Redruth a comfortable 14-point lead at the break.

The first try after the break would prove crucial and it went to the Reds as Frazer Kellythorne picked up a loose ball from a line-out and raced away for a brilliant solo try, which was converted by Thirbly.

Thirbly then added two more penalties to put the game beyond Launceston.

One of the biggest cheers of the afternoon then came as Peter Joyce was replaced by Craig Williams.

It was announced before kick-off that Joyce had signed for the Cornish Pirates and was playing his last game for the club.

Redruth continued to search for more tries as Neil Broadbank made a penetrating break. He was held up just short of the line, but managed to slip a pass to Collins who went over for his second try of the game.

Thirbly converted from the touchline and although Launceston added two late scores, through Richard Bright and Michael Roach, Redruth had given Joyce the perfect derby day send-off.
