With one week left, and some rearranged fixtures to play, the top of the Redruth Summer Pool League is hotting up with five teams in with a chance to be league winners.
It seemed plain sailing a couple weeks ago, with the Redruth British Railway Puffers leading the way with a healthy gap.
The Puffers went into last week’s game with Clinton Cowboys with a four-point lead over rivals Redruth B/Railway Robbers, but now the Robbers are in front after Clinton thrashed the Puffers 8-1 at the Railway club.
The Cowboys have a realistic chance to win there first Redruth Summer Pool League. Clinton have a rearranged game against Trevenson SC and a return match against the Puffers on Thursday night.
Clinton won first frame with Dave Mullen beating Simon Knuckey. Dave Angove played good pool again and put the Cowboys 2-0 up by beating Wayne Knuckey. In the third frame it was going to be a tight finish with both Cowboy Andrew Martin and Puffer Keith Tippett both attcking with some exposive potting, but then an error by the Puffers captain let in Andrew who had two shots on the final black, but he missed the ball completely. As a result Tippett won the game to give Puffers there only point.
The Cowboys took control of the match after this by taking the final six frames with singles victories from Neil Angove who beat Merryn Seale, Mark Wiills who beat Ray Jennings and in final singles game Gavin Trezona beating Chris Symons.
The Puffers’ heavy loss paved a great opening for last season’s champions Redruth British Railway Robbers who have gone to the top table with a 7-2 away victory over Countryman B.
Daniel Kazmarek went on first to give Robbers a fine start. Paul Robinson went on second and played with good patient game to beat Rob Grimstead. He was followed by the other Robbers players who took all six singles with Steven Holman, Malcolm Bickham, Neil ' Barrett and Dennis Finch all winning.
Trevenson Social Club, another team still in the hunt for the title, came back to winning ways with a 7-2 win over Oxford Inn Oxes. Trevenson who have been struggling for players lately, took the first three frames against Oxes with Robbie Lawrence defeating A O Neil, Adam Krey beating Ryan Sedgman and Sam Kevrne beating Brian Taylor.
Oxes star player this season Dave Griiffiths enjoyed a tactical win over Rob Hosking, but Trevenosn won next two frames to go 5-1 up with H Wise winning well against Nathan Mitchell and Dave Carter winning in style. Trevenson took two out three of the doubles for victory and now Trevenson have to finish there season with key matches against Clinton SC and Redruth British Railway Robbers.
Well done to Redruth British Railway Virgins who were in fine form against St Day Inn. The Saints won first frame with Matt Cook beating John Williams. Virgins then won the next five frames through Ben Walters, Roy Stephens, John Tregonning, Len Tregonning and Alan Williams. The Saints came back to win all three doubles to make the score a bit respectable.
The Redruth Summer Pool League Committee past on their condolenceses to the family of Colin Harris who sadly died at the weekend.
The league secretary said: “Colin was a much liked pool player and gentleman over the years and the Redruth Summer Pool League & Camborne Redruth Winter Pool League will miss him very much.”
