Although fitness training sessions have been taking place at the Recreation Ground for a number of weeks, official training for the new rugby season starts this Thursday, July 9, at 7pm.
The club officials are delighted to announce that this year the club coaching will be in the very reliable hands of David Rule and Darren Chapmen, who have a wealth of experience as players and coaches at a very high level.
David will be a new face to the club’s players but he is very well respected on the coaching circuit with over eight years at Plymouth Albion, where he was an important cog in Graham Dawe’s coaching set-up and two separate spells at Camborne when he often worked together with Darren Chapman.
Darren needs very little in the way of introduction as he was the coach at the Recreation Ground for three years and was responsible for the club’s promotion into the Cornwall and Devon League after his first season in 2002–03. Under his direction the team not only won the Cornwall League One title, after many years of disappointing results, but were the winners of the Cornwall Clubs’ Cup – defeating the blossoming Mount’s Bay side three times in the season.
The club sees these appointments as part of the new start, which is required after last year’s disappointing season, and officials are convinced that David and Darren will bring out the best in the local players with an emphasis on both individual and team skills. They are both looking forward to the challenge and hope that players, both current and new, will turn out in good numbers from Thursday onwards to prepare for the season’s start on September 5. They will be supported throughout the season by Neville Curnow, the director of rugby, and Paul Stephens the senior team secretary. As Darren is still out in South Africa relaxing at the end of the Lions’ Tour, David will begin on Thursday on his own before the pair come together next week.
