CRICKET fever is set to sweep the nation today when England meet Australia in the first test of the 2009 Ashes series and while many clubs across the county will be cheering on Andrew Strauss’ men a cricketer playing at Falmouth won’t be.
Matt Wiley, aged 19, from Perth Australia, has been over in Cornwall since May playing in the Jolly’s ECB Cornwall Cricket League Premier Division for Falmouth.
He arrived in the Duchy with his friend and Aussie team-mate, James Newnham, who currently plays for Newquay.
The pair came over to Cornwall as it is currently close season down under and they wanted to get some match action.
Matt, who plays in the Australian WACA 1st Grade League when back home has enjoyed his time in England so far and scored a 110 runs at home to Callington two weeks ago.
Wiley, whose team Joondalup Districts Cricket Club play in the same league as former Australian international cricketer Justin Langer, says he may look to come back to Trescobeas beyond this season and represent Falmouth again.
He is also looking forward to the Ashes series, which starts with the 1st test at Cardiff’s Swalec Stadium today.
“It’s a bit biased but I think we (Australia) will win,” said Matt, who added that his fellow Falmouth team-mates would receive some traditional Aussie banter if his countrymen managed to repeat the 5-0 whitewash they dished out to England in the last Ashes series in 2006/07.
