Mawnan bowls club get Mylor boost

The Mawnan men bowls team kicked off their week with a trip to Mylor to face their B team.

Jack Gretton’s rink made a very slow start, going into the tea break 11 - 4 down and by the 17th end they were 27 - 11 down. It was at this stage Mawnan woke up and started to play, winning the last four ends with a 4, 7, 2, 1, but they left it too late and the rink was won by Mylor 27 - 21.

John Wright’s rink made a good start going into the lead from the first end, by the eighth end they were 1 - 11 up but took their foot off the pedal giving Mylor a chance to take the lead. On the 20th end the score was even 17 all but a one on the last end by Mawnan gave them the rink 17 - 18.

Malcolm Dearnley’s rink took the lead on the sixth end and by tea were leading 8 - 9.

Whatever was in the tea seemed to suit Mawnan as they romped home to take the rink 15 - 34. The end result was a win for Mawnan taking four points.

Truro B 19 Mawnan L’dies 14 The following day the ladies of Mawnan were at home to Truro B in the Rippon Cup.

With Elaine Compson as skip the home side took the lead from the start going in at the tea break 13 - 3 up. Truro came back in the second half, but were unable to make ground on the home side who won the game 19 - 14.

Mawnan 64 Truro B 54 Truro B were then visitors to Mawnan in the men’s league.

Jack Gretton’s rink were caught by surprise and found themselves nine-all at the half way stage. After tea Mawnan came out with a 3, 1, 4, 3 to take a 20 - 10 lead and looked set to win the rink. Truro came back with a determine effort but could not quite make up the deficit losing the rink 22 - 21.

John Wright’s rink were one shot down at the break, but made amends in the second half to win the rink 19 - 15. Malcolm Dearnley’s rink took the lead after 5 ends and stayed ahead to win the rink 23 - 18.

Winning all three rinks Mawnan gained all five points. Falmouth C 90 Mawnan 39 The previous week Mawnan men were away to Falmouth C.

Malcolm Dearnley’s rink trailed behind Falmouth from the start, going 10 - 2 down after six ends. By the 13th end they were 18 - 10 down, but a 1, 3, 1, 2, closed the gap to 18 - 17, then as so often happens at Falmouth the home side scored a five giving them a six-point cushion which proved enough.

Mawnan scored a 1, 1, 2 on the last three ends but could not catch up losing the rink 23 - 21. Jack Gretton’s rink were out bowled by an in form Falmouth, with J Jones as skip who went on to win the rink 38 - 6.

John Wright’s rink made a good start and after sven ends were 4 - 5 up, but a four by Falmouth on the next end gave them the lead and they never looked back, winning the rink 29 - 12. Falmouth won all five points. The Ladies were also away to Falmouth in the Ladies’ evening league on Monday evening and like the men took a heavy defeat going down 45 - 6.

In the Rippon Cup the ladies were away to Perranporth and with Pat Paget as skip they had a fight on their hands being 8 - 2 down after five ends. After 11 ends the score was 12 - 9 to the home side, then Mawnan scored a 4, 1, 1, 1, to go into the lead 12 - 16, a lead which they maintained to win the match 18 - 19.

Redruth D 46 Mawnan 57 The men were also away to Redruth D and Malcolm Dearnley’s rink went behind from the first end, but managed to draw level eight all after nine ends.

Redruth came back with a 1,4,2,3 to take a nine point lead, although Mawnan won four of the last five ends they were unable to catch up losing the rink 22 - 16.

Jack Gretton’s rink went into the lead from the first end and ended up winning the rink 9 - 26. John Wright’s rink won the first three ends leading 0 - 7 and by tea were 5 - 10 up. On the 18th end Mawnan were 9 -15 up and looking to win the rink but Redruth pulled out all the stops and won the last three ends with a 1,4,1 to draw level 15 - 15. Although Mawnan won the match 46 - 57 they only took 3 and a 1/2 points.
