Falmouth 222-5 St Austell 210-8 There was another good finish at Trescobeas on Saturday with again any result possible going into the final over.
St Austell needed 18 runs, with two wickets remaining, but could only manage six as the game ended in a draw.
It was a good fight back from the visitors who at one stage looked well out of contention. For Falmouth, despite the disappointment of not taking maximum points, the higher scoring draw means there has only been one defeat in the last five games.
The Falmouth innings centred on a century from Jonathan Udy who carried his bat for 103. He put on 61 for the first wicket with Adrian Noott before Noott was lbw to Steve Raven for 24.
Raven, in an inspired spell, then bowled Antony Angove for eight and had Stefan Churcher caught behind by Taylor Williams for 0.
Falmouth were wobbling a little at 71 for three but Udy and Steve Williams got their heads down to add 90 for the fourth wicket. Williams was dismissed for 37 but Matt Wiley joined Udy to take the total to 222 with Wiley run out off the last ball.
Falmouth’s innings was limited to 49 overs as twelve overs were lost following a heavy shower. Raven took three for 29 from nine overs.
The St Austell reply got off to a bad start as Angove dismissed both openers, Dan Jarman and Matt Ellison, with just three on the board. George Popperwell then ran out Williams for a single. Duncan Ayres then bowled Michael Bone for four and had Matthew Rowe caught for 41.
He followed up by having Jeremy Grigg lbw for 12 to leave the visitors in big trouble at 72 for six.
Former Falmouth skipper Sean Hooper wasn’t prepared to give it up however. With Simon Ellison he added 72 for the seventh wicket to keep the visitors in the game. Ellison was caught and bowled by Jon Udy for 35 but Andrew Libby and Hooper then closed in on the target adding 60 for the eighth wicket.
Hooper finally fell for 61 off the bowling of Dave Neville to leave Libby 42 not out. Ayres took three for 46 and Angove two for 43 with one apiece for Neville and Udy.
Elsewhere on Saturday St Just won at Werrington to close the gap at the top to just a point and Truro are only eleven points behind after they won at Callington by six wickets.
Paul’s revival continued when they dismissed Newquay for 47 to win by 119 runs. On Saturday Falmouth make their second visit to Newquay this season. They will be looking to avenge the defeat at the Sports Centre in early may by 26 runs.
St Just 111-8, Falmouth 88-8 (Vinter Cup semi-final) Falmouth’s hopes of reaching this season’s Vinter Cup final were ended by St Just at Hayle last week.
Falmouth looked to have done well to restrict the holders to 111 for eight in their 20 overs. It proved though to be more than enough on a dry pitch that got lower and slower. Falmouth were never in serious contention after losing early wickets. St Just lost the key early wickets of Neil Curnow and Gavin Edwards to Antony Angove. David Roberts made 22 and Gary Thomas 32. Angove ended with five for 18 from his five overs.
Nick George bowled full and straight to wreck the Falmouth top order. He bowled Angove for 0 and trapped Adrian Noott lbw for nine.
Stefan Churcher survived a couple of lbw shouts in an over but not the third. When Matt Wiley was bowled playing an ambitious shot it was 19 for four in the sixth over.
Nick George took four for 19 from the sea end and with Gary Thomas only conceding 12 runs at the other end Falmouth were in trouble at 26 for four at the halfway mark.
Duncan Ayres made 23 and Steve Williams 10 but the contest was effectively over long before the end. St Just will meet Paul in the final at Camborne next Wednesday at 6pm. Paul were 13 run winners over Truro in the other semi-final after making 170 for three.
St Just 111-8 (G Thomas 32, D Roberts 22, G May 16; A Angove 5-18, G Popperwell 2-27, Falmouth 88-8 (D Ayres 23; N George 4-13, M George 3-26). St Just beat Falmouth by 23 runs.
