THIS week Falmouth has been inundated with league fixtures, with both the As and Bs playing catch-up games. The men played eight games in total and the ladies two.
Falmouth As welcomed Chacewater Bs to their green expecting a tough encounter. Falmouth’s Tony Nancholas trailed 6-9 at the tea interval at ten ends. The tea and biscuits had a magic effect on the Falmouth squad as in the next six ends they scored 16 shots to Chris Instance Chacewater rink three giving Falmouth a 22-12 lead. Falmouth maintained this lead to win 27-18.
Falmouth’s David Winnan’s rink were 11-6 in the lead after ten ends against David Williamson’s Chacewater rink. Chacewater closed the gap to tie 13-13 after 14 ends, but winning five ends in succession Falmouth moved 26-13 into the lead and won the game 27-17.
Falmouth’s Tom Reid’s rink found themselves 7-12 in arrears after ten ends. Things did not improve after the tea interval and Ron Darlington’s Chacewater rink bowling much steadier than the Falmouth rink went on to win 25-14. This left Falmouth with a welcome four points to Chacewater’s Bs one point.
On Thursday the As visited Stithians, always a difficult fixture on a well-worn green.
Falmouth’s David Winnan’s rink were all level at 9-9 after nine ends against Max Burley’s Stithians rink. After 16 ends the Falmouth rink had moved to a 24-13 lead, but a sudden loss of concentration cost them dearly as Stithians picked up a three and a four to be only four shots in arrears after 18 ends. The Falmouth rink just managed to hold on to win 25-23.
Tom Reid’s Falmouth rink led 12-10 after ten ends against Stithians David Pascoe’s rink, but were to remain on 12 for the next six ends as Stithians moved out to a 24-12 lead. Falmouth recovered a little to trail 17-25 after 19, but had two disastrous last ends dropping two consecutive threes, which cost Falmouth the game and went on to lose 31-17.
Falmouth’s Tony Nancholas rink led 10-5 after ten ends and went on to lead 15-7 after 16 ends. Then followed a very bizarre 18th end, the jack had been moved to within 18 inches from the ditch when Stithians number three Jack Garland played a fairly heavy bowl, which looked destined for the ditch, but the bowl stopped on the edge then rolled back up the green on to the jack.
Falmouth’s Ron Medlyn then played a similar shot. This also ran back the green to dislodge the shot bowl and take shot. Unbelievably Falmouth’s Tony Nancholas’ shot also rolled back. Both sides had never seen this happen before and Falmouth christened rink two as the Asda rink – to get a “roll back”. This was all taken in great fun and good spirit.
Stithians have nowhere to go on their green to stop the wear and tear of everyone having to bowl on the same areas all the time. But they have done a lot of work to add another rink to their green, which will give them room to move the rinks around to prevent so much wear and tear. They are a great village club and long may they continue to keep bowls at Stithians.
When the scores were added it was found Stithians had won by one shot 64-63 to give them three points to Falmouth’s two.
On Friday Falmouth’s As were again on duty to welcome Perranporth A in a previously cancelled match.
Falmouth proved far too strong for a poor Perranporth team and rattled up a 44 shot win with all the rinks recording good wins. This gave Falmouth a much needed five point boost up the league.
David Winnan’s Falmouth rink ended their game with a “hot shot” recording all eight bowls as counters in their 29-11 win.
Falmouth B also played three games this week and visited Carnon Downs B team on Monday. Falmouth’s John Jones rink were taken by storm by Carnon’s Alan Foster’s rink as Carnon ran away to a 29-2 lead after 11 ends. Falmouth did play a little better in the second half, but even then were well beaten 38-12 by the Carnon rink.
Falmouth’s Paul Williams rink were 12-9 in the lead after ten ends, but then proceeded to lose the next five ends to Carnon’s Dough Thomas’ rink, who led 16-12 after 15. Carnon went on to win 21-16.
Falmouth’s Paul Bobins rink were leading 11-7 after ten ends against Carnon’s Mike West rink, but disaster struck the Falmouth rink on the 16th end as they lost five shots to the Carnon rink, who went on to win 21-19, giving Carnon all five points to Falmouth’s nil.
On Wednesday Penryn B visited Falmouth Bs and did not enjoy a very profitable evening for them as the Falmouth team raced away to big win. Falmouth’s John Jones’ rink completely outplayed Denis Nicholls rink with Falmouth’s Mel Angel having an excellent game helping his team to a 38-9 win. Falmouth’s Paul Williams rink were only 13-9 in the lead after ten ends, but an excellent second half by the team defeated Cyril Philpotts rink 31-18. Ed Pereira’s Penryn rink trailed 10-6 after ten ends against Falmouth’s Paul Bobins team. Penryn tried really hard to close the gap, but Falmouth held on to win 19-12 and collect all five points to Penryn’s nil.
On Friday the Bs visited Chacewater Ds and with several member of their squad unavailable found Chacewater a hard nut to crack.
Falmouth’s Paul Williams rink were 11-11 after ten ends and 14-14 after 14, but they pulled away from Chacewater’s J Zammits rink to win 22-16.
Falmouth John Jones rink after a tough game was narrowly defeated by C Pay’s Chacewater rink by two shots 19-17.
Chacewater’s Chris Jackson’s rink held a 10-6 lead after ten ends and after a very even second half narrowly defeated Falmouth’s Paul Bobins rink 20-15, giving Chacewater Ds four points to Falmouth Bs one point.
On Monday Falmouth Cs played Mylor Bs.
Falmouth John Maunders rink led Harry Colt’s Mylor men 12-6 after 11 ends. Tea was taken and remarkably Falmouth did not score one shot in the last 11 ends as Mylor won 26-12.
Falmouth’s Alan Winn’s rink were 10-5 in the lead after ten ends, but got stuck on 11 for five ends as Barry Mays Mylor rink went ahead 15-11. But Falmouth fought back to win the last three ends 5-4-1 to snatch the game and beat Mylor 23-16.
Falmouth’s Harry Stephens rink took an early lead 13-9 after ten ends, but Mylor’s Adrian Poole’s rink fought back to lead 20-18 after 18 ends. But Falmouth bagged a three on the 18th and one on the last to win the game by one shot 22-21 leaving Falmouth with two points to Mylor’s three.
Falmouth C visited Carnon B on Wednesday and like their B team came away without a point, which was to be expected as Carnon Bs proved the stronger team to take all five points.
Falmouth’s ladies Rippon team had two games this week.
Visiting Trenance Newquay on Tuesday, Falmouth’s Carol Pereir’s team found themselves 15-2 in arrears, but went on to win six ends in succession to improve their score. But Jenny Maunder steered her Trenance rink to a 23-16 win.
On Friday Falmouth’s Carol Pereir’s rink faced a daunting task to play Jenny Primes Chacewater ladies.
Falmouth surprised the Chacewater ladies as they took a 16-9 lead. Chacewater fought back to snatch and four, the score now 16-13. Falmouth found themselves five down on the last end, but Carol Pereir managed a second bowl to save the game and Falmouth ran out very surprised winners 16-14. This was a great result for the Falmouth ladies, who all bowled well.
