Helston Athletic manager Steve Massey admitted that he didn’t see his side’s emphatic 5-1 win at Bodmin Town on Saturday coming.

The Blues raced into a four-goal lead after just 30 minutes at Priory Park, with a five minute hat-trick from Phil Cattran included, before netting another after the break to seal their biggest win of the season.

“Certainly I just didn’t see that coming at all,” Massey said. “I always fancied us, I really did. I thought that we had enough about us to cause them a lot of problems.

“It’s results and performances like that, it goes some way to [showing] why we’re in football.”

Cattran grabbed the headlines with a blistering five-minute hat-trick, and Massey was quick to praise his striker.

“He leads the team and leads the line really well,” Massey said. “And if he sparks and gets an early goal, like he did, it lifts him. He thrives on goals or even if little things come off like a little flick or if he nutmegs somebody, he thrives on that type of incident that just boosts his adrenaline.

“He’s probably as technically gifted as any other footballer in the South West Peninsula, without a doubt. He’s got 18 goals now and he’s got the ability to even get into the twenties for a season.”

The latest chapter in the rivalry between Helston and Falmouth Town will be written on Good Friday when the teams meet at Bickland Park (ko 11am).

Town boss Andrew Westgarth admitted that the match has not come at the best time for his side, who will have an eye on Easter Monday’s Cornwall Senior Cup final against Saltash United.

He said: “It’s not the greatest timing to play your closest rivals four days before a cup final but it is what it is, we’ll prepare the best we can for Falmouth Town and we’ll give it the respect it deserves.”

While Town could be forgiven for having their minds elsewhere, a source of motivation will be to settle a score against their local rivals, with the Blues having won 1-0 when they last met at Kellaway Park on Boxing Day.

Massey said: “The two fixtures I look out for when the fixtures are done is the Falmouth games and it’s no coincidence that they’re our biggest rivals. There’ll be a good crowd up there and it’s set up really nicely for a great derby.

“Whatever team they turn out, they’ll be representing Falmouth. Andy Westgarth will get them up without a doubt. They’re not going to roll over, whether they’ve got a cup final on the Monday or not.”
