Wendron United 11 (eleven), Ludgvan 0

RORY Jarvis scored six goals as Wendron United ran riot against South West Peninsula League Division 1 West strugglers Ludgvan on Saturday.

TJ Walter added two, with Finn Robinson, Ben Ringrose and an own goal completed the scoring as Wendron handed the Hurlers their eighth double-figure defeat of the season.

It wasn’t quite the 20-1 annihilation that league leaders Liskeard Athletic inflicted upon them, but it was a game in which the hosts rarely had to step out of second gear on their way to picking up their first league win of 2019.

Robinson got the Dron off to a flyer in the fourth minute when he won the ball on the edge of the box before slotting past visiting ‘keeper Josh Etheredge-Ryan.

That early strike didn’t immediately open the floodgates, with Jarvis having a shot saved before Ringrose headed over the bar.

Robinson was then thwarted by Etheredge-Ryan but got the better of him shortly after when the Ludgvan man charged out of his box. He managed to round him but his cross from a tight angle was cleared off the line.

Right-back Joe Souch thought he had bagged the second on 20 minutes when his powerful strike found the top corner, but the whistle had already gone for offside.

But the elusive second goal finally arrived a minute later when Jarvis sprinted past the defence and slotted the ball under the visiting ‘keeper.

That goal sparked a brief flurry, with TJ Walter scoring from the edge of the box two minutes later after good work from Robinson, before Ringrose danced his way through the defence and guided the ball into the net another two minutes later.

Cameron Wheat, fresh from the bench after Chris Mulroy succumbed to injury, struck the crossbar with a header before firing inches wide at the end of a quick counter attack.

But Jarvis was on hand to net his second and his side’s fifth of the half in the final act of the opening 45 minutes with the pick of the bunch; a superb effort into the top corner from about 30 yards following a quickly-taken free-kick.

They extended their lead to seven before half of those in attendance had returned for the second half. Walter poked home from close range after pouncing on a weak goal kick before Wheat’s cross was turned in by Ludgvan’s Graham Stirr.

There was a lovely moment ten minutes into the second half when Simon Williamson, the youngest son of club chairman Kevin, who died two weeks ago, was introduced from the bench to replace TJ Walter.

That sub came just after Wendron ‘keeper Dan Stedman was briefly forced into action to stop Connor Catterall’s strike, but normal service was resumed a couple of minutes later when Jarvis beat the offside trap and rounded Etheredge-Ryan to seal his hat-trick.

Jarvis then missed the chance to net another, instead firing over from six yards, but did get on the scoresheet again when he tapped in from close range after Wheat’s shot was tipped into his path.

Not content with settling for what they had, Jarvis spurned another chance to score soon after before Jamie Webb saw his header cleared off the line, while Williamson was denied a dream goal when Etheredge-Ryan saved his header from point-blank range.

The hosts hit double figures with ten minutes to go when Jarvis hammered home from five yards following a succession of corners, before the same man struck again five minutes later to notch his sixth and complete the scoring.
