Wendron United 8, St Agnes 2

SCOTT Palmer scored four goals as Wendron United reached the Cornwall Charity Cup quarter-finals with ease at Underlane on Saturday.

Palmer put his side ahead from the spot before Sam Connelly levelled for the Combination League side. Chris Mulroy restored the hosts’ lead with Sam Humphries doubling the advantage just before half-time.

Palmer scored three more within 13 minutes of the restart before Mulroy scored his second of the game. TJ Walter scored a tap-in for goal number eight before Ed Wilton bagged another consolation for the visitors.

Dron opened the scoring on 22 minutes when Finn Robinson was brought down in the box by the St Agnes ‘keeper, with Palmer stepping up to score his first of the day with a powerful strike into the bottom corner.

But the visitors were level three minutes later when Connelly found space following a corner kick and had time to fire into the roof of the net.

It remained level for eight minutes before Mulroy bagged his first of the afternoon when the strong wind picked up his touchline cross and all the way into the top corner, before Humphries delivered a devastating blow to the visitors when he tucked in from close range to double the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Wendron came out flying after the break with Palmer scoring two back-post headers within ten minutes of the start of the second half, before the stand-in captain capped off his superb afternoon in front of goal with a fine volley from Mulroy’s cross on 58 minutes.

Mulroy turned scorer again with 20 minutes to go when he drove substitute Cameron Wheat’s low cross into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, before Wheat was again on hand to tee up fellow sub Walter for a simple tap-in to round off the hosts’ scoring with seven minutes to go.

The visitors never gave up and Wilton grabbed the goal that his efforts up front deserved with a simple header at the far post in the 84th minute, but it is Wendron who advance to February’s quarter-finals.
