St Stephen 3, Wendron Utd 1 (aet)

WENDRON Reserves suffered an agonising extra time defeat in the semi-final of the Cornwall Junior Cup at Hayle on Tuesday.

Having had Ben Coleman sent off in the extra half hour, they then conceded a controversial penalty, having earlier had another hotly-contested spot kick awarded against them.

Wendron's joint manager Josh McDonald said: "The boys gave everything for us. We played our game and played some really attractive football.

"They went out and followed our instructions to a tee. They can really hold their heads high and be proud of the way they carried themselves and performed.

"I thought we were better in every department, but that doesn’t always get you the result. St Stephen know how to win games and play to their strengths really well. Best of luck to them in the final."

The Underlane side enjoyed the majority of possession early on and broke the deadlock on 22 minutes when Billy Stone was fouled on the left hand side.

Joe Chapman whipped in a dangerous free kick which was headed home by James Moseley.

Warren Whittington was a constant threat down the left flank for Wendron, who created further chances when the dangerous Charlie Clarke crossed for Ben Coleman to volley inches wide. Coleman returned the favour for his strike partner, but Clarke’s diving header was straight at the keeper.

In the second half St Stephen dominated the opening 20-25 minutes, and scored deserved equaliser, all be it a controversial one.

The ball was cleared and hit a St Stephen player on the way out, yet a throw was given their way. From that throw a pass went into Craig Coad, who appeared to control it with his arm, turned and was tackled in what the referee deemed to be an unfair manner. Courtney Rowe converted the resultant penalty.

Stone miscued his shot having been set clear by Whittington, before extra time proved painful for Wendron when Coleman received a red card for a second yellow card.

Coad then rubbed salt into the wounds when he headed home a corner, before Rowe scored his second penalty of the match after being brought down in the area.
