FALMOUTH TOWN drew a blank against Launceston on Saturday but still emerged with what could be an important point in a closely-fought encounter at Pennygillam, writes Matt Friday.

After their goal-fest at St Austell four days earlier Town played out a goalless but entertaining affair, with Olly Walker and Luke Brabyn coming closest for the visitors.

Falmouth started brightly and could have led early on when Walker marched through on goal, but he should have done better when he fired straight at Launceston keeper Cory Harvey.

Town did have the ball in the net in the 19th minute when Jordan Annear hooked David Broglino’s free-kick back for Ryan Martt to head home, but Annear was flagged offside.

After a quieter period of play, Marcello Jones almost lit up the game a couple of minutes before half-time when he tested Harvey with a speculative 25-yard volley.

Launceston also threatened to score just before half-time when Callum Thompson struck the post with his effort before Chris Wright hooked the ball over the bar from a few yards out.

Brabyn was at the heart of Town’s attack in the second half, with his dangerous cross just evading Annear and Rob Wearne before he fired over the bar from just outside the box.

It became end-to-end for a while, with Callum Watson’s mazy run ending with his shot deflecting wide, while David Broglino had two powerful efforts blocked at the other end.

Launceston continued to search for a late winner with the impressive Watson volleying wide on 87 minutes before top-scorer Sam Davey forced a crucial save out of Barnes in injury-time.

But it was Falmouth who had the final, and best, chance in the 93nd minute when Annear teed up Brabyn who inexplicably steered his shot over the bar from four yards.

Packet Pick: Tom Annear – did well on return to starting line-up, won everything in the air and distributed the ball well from the back.

Falmouth: R Barnes (c), D Blizzard, O Moody, J Ward, T Annear, R Martt (H Clarke 68), L Brabyn, D Broglino, M Jones (R Wearne HT), J Annear, O Walker (J Richards HT).

Falmouth’s next match is at home to Camelford on Wednesday night.
