Lanner 10, Penryn 29

Penryn remain three points clear at the top of the Cornwall/Devon League after a 29-10 win at St. Day against Lanner.

This was another impressive performance by the Borough against opposition who are notoriously tough to defeat, as a previously unbeaten Honiton side found a couple of weeks ago, and many other sides will discover as the season goes on.

Speaking after the game, Borough coach Ian Morgan said: "The defence from the lads was superb. We have worked hard on our line speed and that really pressured Lanner today. Playing on a tricky pitch, we adapted well and tried to play an expansive game, which at times caused Lanner major issues and we controlled the ball well."

Morgan had words of praise for the opposition: "Lanner are a strong team and they will cause problems for a lot of sides this season, we are pleased that we are not one of them!"

Crucially, the win was achieved with a try scoring bonus point after second placed Wellington saw off Tavistock 59-0 and third placed Saltash racked up 89 points at Wessex.

The first of Borough's tries was scored by Adam Hughes, with a penalty from Tomas Oliver taking Penryn's tally up to eight points. Grant Randlesome then touched down for his fourth try of the season. Penryn's other tries were scored by Stephen Patterson and Andrew Seviour, who grabbed his eighth of the campaign in the process. Tomas Oliver converted the last three of the tries.

Morgan also had praise for an early change in the forwards: "They reacted well when Marcus Nelson came on for Jon Followell after ten minutes.

"Marcus caused the Lanner maul all sorts of problems. Overall, the pack played really well together and Nathan Strick really pulled the strings well and controlled the game well at fly half. The lads were rightfully happy with the result, and hopefully we can carry this into another tough game next Saturday at home to Withycombe."
