MARCELLO JONES’ injury-time penalty snatched a dramatic victory for Falmouth Town, as they beat Callington Town 1-0 at Bickland Park on Saturday to extend their unbeaten run, writes Matt Friday.

Falmouth should have been out of sight before half-time with the hosts squandering numerous chances earlier on, but Marcello Jones’ late spot-kick finally sealed the win.

The match kicked off 30 minutes late after Callington were held up by transport delays, and it was one-way traffic on the pitch as Falmouth bossed the first half from start to finish.

The home side could have had two in the first seven minutes. David Broglino’s shot was saved by Chris Wearing, before Joe Cooper’s goalbound header was cleared off the line.

Falmouth’s dominance continued as Callington struggled to get out of their half. Wearing was called into action to keep out Broglino’s free-kick, while Jones and Brabyn both sent shots wide.

Wearing was singlehandedly keeping his side level, saving Brabyn’s strike after the winger skilfully saw off two defenders, before denying another headed effort from Cooper.

The hosts were in complete control, but Callington’s Andre Rodukov made sure Ryan Barnes was still alert, forcing a good save out of the keeper on the stroke of half-time.

The second half was a somewhat more balanced affair. Jones and Cooper were the latest to come close for Falmouth, while Callington striker Dan Pethick twice tested Barnes at the other end.

Incredibly it was still goalless as the clock reached 80 minutes. The hosts continued to bombard their opponents with Jones shooting wide and Brabyn hitting the post.

However Falmouth finally broke the deadlock in the 90th minute when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Brabyn. Marcello Jones slotted home to win it with virtually the final kick.

Packet Pick: Luke Brabyn – Spent the match skinning the Callington defence, never gave up after losing the ball and won the penalty for the winner.

Falmouth: R Barnes, D Blizzard (J Ward 66), O Moody, T Annear, J Cooper, R Martt (O Walker 59), L Brabyn, J Webber, M Jones, D Broglino, H Clarke (A Westgarth 70).

Falmouth play Camelford in the league on Tuesday, before hosting Helston Athletic in the Walter C. Parson Cup on Friday night.
